Description: The division of Moldova into these main areas for grape production was proposed in the complex research of Professor P.I.Ivanov in 1954. This research examined the following zones: the northern zone (Balti) - bordering on Sculeni-Balti-Floresti-Soroca, the central zone (Codru) - bordering on Leova-Chimislia-Tighina, the southern zone ((Cahul) including the whole republican territory between Prut-Danube-Dniestr) and the southeastern zone (Nistreana) - Transnistria, from Kamenka to Slobozia.
As a result of this analysis micro-areas of production of vine and wine, raw materials for white and red vintage wines, aromatic and distilled wines, etc, were defined, described and characterized. At the present time the "Law on Wine and Vineyards" of the Republic of Moldova, adopted by Parliament on 2nd July 1994(№ 132-XIII) defines the vine zones, vine centers and micro-areas (as areas for the cultivation of marketable vine and the production of winemaking materials).
